Who we are
Good Hope Union United Methodist Church stands as a testament to faith, perseverance, and community. Founded in 1870, just a few years after the end of the Civil War, the church was established by formerly enslaved and newly emancipated African Americans who sought a place to worship freely, build community, and nurture spiritual life.
These early founders carried a vision of hope — a belief that faith, education, and unity would sustain future generations. With determination and sacrifice, they organized a congregation that would become a spiritual home and a cornerstone for families in the surrounding community.
A Church Rooted in Faith and Community
From its earliest days, Good Hope Union has served as far more than a place of Sunday worship. The church became a gathering place where people shared news, supported one another, and organized for the wellbeing of the community. It provided:
• Spiritual guidance and worship
• Leadership development
• Community support and fellowship
• A place of refuge and belonging
Like many historic African American churches, Good Hope Union played an important role in nurturing leadership and sustaining the social and spiritual life of the community.
A Legacy Passed Through Generations
For more than 150 years, generations of families have walked through the doors of Good Hope Union to worship, celebrate milestones, and seek comfort during difficult times. Baptisms, weddings, funerals, revivals, and homecomings have all been part of the church’s living history.
Throughout the decades, members have faithfully served as pastors, lay leaders, choir members, ushers, trustees, and volunteers — each contributing to the continued life of the church.
Today, Good Hope Union continues to live out its mission through worship, ministry, outreach, and service. The church remains committed to building a welcoming community grounded in faith, compassion, and fellowship.
Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future
As Good Hope Union United Methodist Church approaches its 156th Homecoming Celebration in 2026, the congregation celebrates not only a milestone year but the enduring legacy of those who came before.
Their courage, faith, and dedication laid the foundation for a vibrant church family that continues to grow, serve, and inspire.
Good Hope Union stands today as a living reminder that faith, when rooted in hope and community, can sustain generations.
